SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned offensive lineman Ako Poti. He spent his first season in the Arena Football League with the SaberCats in 2012. The AFL’s free agency period for exclusive negotiations with players from a team’s 2012 roster opened on Monday, Oct. 15 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 4.
"We take a lot of pride in our offensive line’s ability to protect our quarterback," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "Ako is a very solid offensive lineman who proved last year that he can contribute to this football team.”
Poti (6-4, 320, Penn State) appeared in five games, starting two of them as a rookie last season. Poti and the SaberCats offensive line allowed just five sacks in his appearances and in addition to providing ample protection for quarterback Mark Grieb, Poti showed some versatility in the passing game, catching two passes on the season.
The Daly City native enrolled at Penn State in January 2007 and was the top reserve at right tackle and played in wins over Florida International, Buffalo, Wisconsin and Temple. Prior to attending Penn State, Poti attended San Francisco Community College. At SFCC Poti was a team captain while also earning All-Conference, All-State and All-America honors at tackle. Poti lettered in football and track and field at Jefferson high school in Daly City, Calif.
