AFL Hall of Fame Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet signed a two-year contract today to remain with the SaberCats throught the conclusion of the 2014 season

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that Arena Football League Hall of Fame Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet has signed a two-year contract. Arbet’s new contract will carry him through the conclusion of the 2014 season as the Head Coach of the SaberCats.

“I’m very happy to get this deal finalized and to continue to prepare ourselves for the 2013 season,” Arbet stated regarding his new contract. “San Jose is my home and I look forward to working hard and bringing another championship to the franchise, city and to the best fans in the AFL.”

2013 will be Arbet’s 17th season with the franchise and 13th as Head Coach. The two-time AFL Head Coach of the Year ranks fourth all-time in regular season wins (126), fifth in winning percentage (.670) among coaches with at least 50 games coached and first in postseason winning percentage (.714) among coaches with at least 15 games coached. In 2007, Arbet became the fifth head coach in AFL history to win 100 games when San Jose defeated the Las Vegas Gladiators, 61-34. He became the third fastest coach to accomplish the feat, reaching the century mark in just 145 games.

San Jose finished the 2012 campaign at 12-6 and reached the postseason for the eighth time under Arbet (ninth overall). He has led the SaberCats to all three of their ArenaBowl championships in 2002, 2004 and 2007.

“As an organization, we are very excited to have Coach Arbet continue to lead this football team,” said Owner Dave Fry. “With his great experience and knowledge, we can only foresee another championship in the future.”

Arbet, a native of Stockton, Calif., was inducted into that city’s Black Sports Hall of Fame, alongside other football greats like Derek Kennard and Webster Slaughter. He attended and played for Sacramento State (1981-85) as well as played in the AFL for two seasons before his playing career was cut short due to injury. Arbet attended Edison High School in his hometown of Stockton where he competed in both football and track.
