SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats held an open player tryout on Saturday, Sept. 29 at their practice facility in Sunnyvale, Calif. The SaberCats announced last week that they will be signing someone to the 35-man preseason roster as a result of the open tryout. 141 players took part in the tryout. Participants had an opportunity to exhibit their skills in front of the entire SaberCats coaching staff and player personnel department.

“We have had success in the past with these types of tryouts,” Owner and Head Coach Darren Arbet said. “We are very serious about signing someone from this tryout and providing them with an opportunity to compete for a roster spot with the SaberCats in the spring.”

Testing included a 40-yard dash and a 20-yard shuttle run that was conducted on field turf. Additional tests were a vertical jump and bench press on a hard surface with position-specific drills on grass.

The league's signing period begins on Monday, Oct. 15 when the SaberCats can re-sign players from the 2012 roster and open free agency starts for all unsigned players. league-wide on Monday, Oct. 29.
