• SaberCats, Cake4Kids and Unity Care Celebrate Birthdays
On Wednesday, February 9, in a growing partnership to support local foster youth, the San Jose SaberCats and Cake4Kids hosted a special birthday cake celebration for 24 at-risk teenage foster boys between the ages of 11-18 to inspire them for success.
SaberCats DB Mervin Brookins, WR/DB Courtney Smith and DB Melvin Stephenson volunteered to speak and sign autographs for the boys. Each athlete faced similar personal challenges growing up and spoke candidly about how they overcame them - by focusing on their passions, working hard and staying away from drugs. Mervin Brookins, fresh from his Arena Bowl title with the Spokane Shock in 2010, said "Don't let your situation dictate where you could be or where you want to be in the future because the only person that controls that is you. At the end of the day, you can't blame anyone for what happens to you and your future except yourself." Click to read more...
